Q: I am a captain and am interested in working with VA Charters. How do I get involved?
A: You may contact us through the ‘Captains’ tab. To see the requirements for interested captains, please click on Captain Info and from there you will see a link to a contact form.

Q: How does VA Charters fund these trips?
A: VA Charters relies on the generosity of individual donors, corporate sponsorship, and fund raising events to support our charter boat trips. It costs VA Charters approximately $250 per veteran per trip.

Q: How do I book a trip with VA Charters?
A: You can contact us directly through this website, or the head of your veterans organization may contact us if you have a group that would like to go out. Please be advised that we will need a copy of your DD214 to provide proof of your discharge status. Disabled Veterans possessing an honorable discharge are eligible to participate.

Q: How many people can go?
A: All of our captains will possess, at minimum, a US Coast Guard ‘OUPV’ or ‘6-Pack’ license, which means they can take 6 passengers in addition to their crew. If you have more than 6 people, we will make every effort to accommodate your needs.

Q: Is there any cost for the trip?
A: No. Our fundraising efforts are the foundation that allow us to provide our services at no cost to the veteran/family member.

Q: What should I bring on my trip?
A: All you need to bring is yourself and something to eat and drink. We strongly recommend sunscreen and a hat as well. We will provide all gear, bait, and tackle.

Q: I’m an experienced angler. Can I bring my own gear?
A: Yes, but let your captain know ahead of time.

Q: Will I need a fishing license?
A: Individual states have their own regulations regarding fishing licenses. Here in Connecticut, you do not need a fishing license on a charter boat because you are covered under the vessel's charter boat permit. Out-of-state passengers will be contacted either by VA Charters or their individual captain if there is a licensing issue.

Q: What happens if the weather is bad on the day of our trip?
A: Weather is a serious safety issue in fishing, and we put the safety of our passengers first. Trips will be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather, rough sea conditions, storm warnings or mechanical problems. The decision to postpone, if necessary, will be made anywhere from 2 days to 3 hours before departure. If the weather deteriorates during a trip, the captain will head back to the dock.

Q: How long do the trips last?
A: Most trips last between 4-5 hours.

Q: Do we get to keep the fish we catch?
A: Yes! You may keep your catch as long as your fish meets DEP regulations for minimum length. Any fish you keep will be cleaned and bagged for you to bring home.

Q: What happens if I get seasick during the trip?
A: Some passengers prefer to stick it out; others will prefer to go in. The captain will allow you to make the decision unless he/she feels it is in your best interest to return to the dock.

Q: Is the Captain always right?
A: YES.
